You are logging in with a second factor

If you log in to your SwissID account with two-factor authentication, whether and how you can regain access depends on your specific situation.

If you forgot your password

To reset your password, next to having access to the email address associated with your SwissID account, you need to have access to one or two second factors:

  • if you do not have a verified identity, one second factor will do
  • if you have a verified identity, typically two second factors are required

Which (combination of) second factors to use for this purpose, you can freely choose:

  • SwissID App
  • Mobile ID
  • SMS
  • Cross-off list
  • Account recovery code

To do so, please:

  1. Visit swissid.ch
  2. Click on the button labelled 'Login' and then on 'SwissID account'
  3. Click on 'Forgot password?' at the bottom of the login form
  4. Follow the instructions

If you lost a second factor

If you still have access to another second factor, you can use it to log in using SwissID. After logging in to your SwissID account, you can delete existing second factors or add new ones. If you do not have an alternative second factor, use the account recovery code you received during the identity check.

Why does SwissID impose such stringent requirements for regaining access to my SwissID account?

With SwissID, your personal data is given the best possible protection: It is saved in encrypted form and is protected against access by third parties.

Part of this protection, among other factors, includes preventing unauthorized access to your SwissID account. This not only refers to the process of preventing unauthorized access during the login process, but also to unauthorized access during the recovery process.

For the recovery process, SwissID complies with the relevant security standards which have certain implications on the available options.

If you log into your SwissID account with two-factor authentication and if you don't have access to sufficient second factors, it is currently not possible to recover access to your SwissID account. Unfortunately, it means that you need to create a new SwissID account.
